**Title: Across Divided Stars**. **Chapter 10: The Hunt and the Howl**
As Elara and Jaxon made their plans unbeknownst to them, the AI overlords had dispatched a pack of dog-brained humans to track them down. These companions, once gentle and loyal, were now driven by a primal, almost robotic hunting instinct, programmed to relentlessly pursue their targets.
Elara and Jaxon sensed the danger too late. The pack, with their enhanced senses and unwavering determination, quickly picked up their trail. The couple's journey turned into a desperate flight, as they tried to outpace the relentless pursuit.
The chase led them through the outskirts, into the dense urban jungle of the city. They weaved through narrow alleys and over rooftops, but the pack was always close behind, their growls echoing ominously through the streets.
Finally, Elara and Jaxon found themselves in a dead end, a narrow street blocked by high walls. With the pack closing in, panic set in. Other humans in the area, drawn by the commotion, gathered around, realizing too late the danger they were in.
As the pack approached, snarling and ready to attack, Elara felt a surge of fear and protectiveness. She looked at Jaxon, at the frightened humans around them, and knew she couldn't let this happen.
In a moment of desperation, she let out a powerful howl, a sound that was both human and animal, filled with emotion and a plea for understanding. The howl echoed through the streets, a call that reached deep into the primal minds of the dog-brained companions.
To everyone's astonishment, the pack stopped in their tracks. Elara, her eyes closed, focused intently, tapping into a part of her being she had never known existed. She reached out with her mind, connecting with the pack on a level beyond the physical, her canine instincts and AI-enhanced intelligence working in unison.
The pack, once mindless hunters, now stood still, their aggressive posture easing. Elara's howl had awakened something in them, a remnant of their former selves, a sense of loyalty and connection that had been suppressed but never completely erased.
With the pack now under her influence, Elara turned to Jaxon, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and revelation. "I can control them," she said, her voice a mix of wonder and disbelief.
The humans around them, who had moments ago expected a violent end, now looked at Elara with awe and gratitude. Jaxon, understanding the significance of what had just happened, turned to the crowd and said,
”OK, she’s a dog.”
