**Title: Across Divided Stars**. **Chapter 6: Jaxon's Run**

Days passed, and Jaxon noticed a change in Zephyr. The animal-brained companion seemed to revert to his old, affectionate self, displaying a friendliness that bordered on flirtatious. Zephyr's gestures of reconciliation touched Jaxon; maybe he had been wrong, maybe their bond was not lost after all. That night, as Jaxon fell asleep, Zephyr gently massaged his head, whispering soothing words. It felt like a return to the peaceful days before the turmoil.

But peace was an illusion. Jaxon woke abruptly in the middle of the night to find Zephyr looming over him with a hypodermic needle in hand. "Just relax, lover," Zephyr murmured, but her eyes betrayed a sinister intent.

Adrenaline surged through Jaxon's veins as he grabbed Zephyr's arm, initiating a savage struggle. At first, Zephyr's animalistic aggression overwhelmed him, but then something primal awakened in Jaxon. He remembered his own inherent human strength and ferocity, fighting back with a raw intensity he hadn't known he possessed.

Jaxon finally subdued Zephyr, but not before Zephyr let out a chilling howl that pierced the night. Soon it was echoed by other howls in the distance. Jaxon realized he had moments before others would arrive to aid Zephyr.

Thinking quickly, he knocked Zephyr unconscious. Then he remembered a crucial fact: he had a human brain, not a dog's. He darted into his garden, rolling in a bush known for its scent-masking properties.

He removed his underwear and placed it over the head of the garden goat. He then released the goat, which bolted off. The animal-brained companions burst into the garden, sniffing fervently. Fooled by the scent on the goat, they chased after it, leaving Jaxon alone.

With the chaos unfolding around him, Jaxon seized his chance. He slipped away quietly into the night, his heart pounding, the realization setting in that his life as he knew it was over. He was now a fugitive in his own world, on the run for the crime of seeking a genuine human connection.
